What Does The Word ‘Resolution’ Mean in 2017?

Hi everyone! It’s a brand new year with brand new thoughts, goals, and the R-word, err, Resolutions! Do you make resolutions? Do you keep ’em? Or do you make a big fat resolution only to forget it five minutes later? Resolutions are tricky. We talk about goals and we manage to work on them, but I don’t know- I’ve never heard a person say mid-year, “oh, I made a resolution at the beginning of the year, and that’s why I’m exercising/ eating healthy/ indulging in good habits!’ It’s human nature- and it sure is funny. We can make idealistic resolutions but what we thrive on are the tasks we set for ourselves. We may not complete all the tasks, goals etc that we plan meticulously (or scribble- which one are you?) but we get an idea of where we’re going. Where we want to be. What we’re working towards. You get the gist. So are resolutions just an illusion? Are they just some sort of weird fantasy we create at the beginning of the year? What’s the deal with resolutions anyway? I’m talking about what the R-word means to me, and my sister Dee makes an appearance on the blog today to share HER thoughts about it.

“17 RESOLUTIONS?! Or 17 mindful thoughts for 2017?” by Dee

Big fat resolutions tend to creep up on me at this time of the year. (Oh, btw, Happy New Year everyone!!)

I have always made a resolution on new year’s eve, but rarely do I actually get around to achieving it. Each year, I’ve always wondered why I’ve made a resolution knowing that I’ve been unsuccessful so many times. Apart from the indulgence (retail, confectionary or otherwise) that happens every holiday season, I think there is a certain enchantment to writing a new year’s resolution. It’s a promise that captures a hope that the future will be better because I’ll be a better version of myself.

A big brave resolution is really like a lottery ticket to a better year ahead – the hopes are high, the chances are low.

So this time, I thought let me divide the enchantment of new year’s eve into several mini-lottery tickets. By this, I mean setting smaller achievable goals instead of big ones. I made a list of 17 really little resolutions – as simple as drink a glass of water in the morning or clean my desk for 5 minutes before starting work. We underestimate the power of little things so often, I thought I should share it with all fellow “resolution-makers” – maybe we can all achieve something big with small changes this 2017 🙂

Well then, I’m off to start my 1st day of the new year – with my 17 mini resolutions for 2017 🙂

  1. wake up and drink a glass of water
  2. press the snooze button just once
  3. walk to class on Monday and Thursday
  4. an apple a day
  5. follow your weekly laundry reminder
  6. smile 🙂
  7. call home
  8. resist buying Coca Cola
  9. pack my bag before bed
  10. start the day with something healthy before the caffeine
  11. read a page of that book I bought and desperately wanted to read before bed
  12. Sunday bike ride
  13. clean my desk each morning
  14. no snacking after dinner
  15. pray
  16. say thanks
  17. do at least 1 resolution a day 🙂

My turn now..

‘ Goals, resolutions, and work, oh my!’ by Aaria

Doodling -What Does The Word 'Resolution' Mean in 2017? Lifestyle essay article via surelysimple.com - tips for the New Year

I normally love making resolutions! It feels SO good at the beginning of the year when you’re raring to go and just do something amazing and plan every little detail (okay, make that big details involving victory etc). Except resolutions have this nasty momentum. Then inertia seeps in. And the resolution is just sitting there, neglected and later forgotten. It makes me irritated, followed by feelings of disappointment that I couldn’t follow up exactly the way I planned it, a little guilt and then I shamelessly forget about it and shrug it off.

Doodling -What Does The Word 'Resolution' Mean in 2017? Lifestyle essay article via surelysimple.com - tips for the New Year

So this year, I wanted to start off the year on a different note. I didn’t want to even think about making a resolution for myself. I got out a piece of paper, grabbed pens and doodled instead. Basically, I haven’t made any resolutions at all this first week of the new year. Instead, I’ve been doodling and drawing (and working on the alphabet challenge going on at @surelysimplechallenge!)

Drill practice:

Here are some I made before the new year:

Comment 'yeah' if you like journals and own multiple notebooks 📓I'm reviewing this beautiful journal by experimenting with how the pages respond to different mediums 📓 because as an artist, I love doodling and lettering in them alongside writing ✍️️. But usually what happens is – ink bleeds on the other side of the page and who likes that?! Well, I think that this grids and guides book by @papress is a winner! The ink DOESN'T bleed and one more cool thing about this book is that ALL the pages are different! . In this video, I'm making a header for a reading list (I bought quite a few books this year but haven't read any of them yet! 😂😂😂) A full review coming soon on surelysimple.com ! Also, what notebook / sketchbook brands are your favorites? Let's chat in the comments 💖💖💖PS- join in the A to Z challenge starting in January (we'll be practicing one letter a day at @surelysimplechallenge – along with lettering artists demonstrating one letter everyday, you possibly getting featured with your entries and I'll be providing free lettering guides too! ) . . Pens!

Comment 'love' if you love brush pens and any pens, really! 🖊I'm trying out these NEW brush pens by #artnfly @artnfly and they are pretty awesome. The tip is very flexible and it works both ways- like a regular brush pen as well as a paintbrush! So you can angle it as well as 'swish it and flick it' (does that make sense) vertically to get paintbrush-like fluid shapes! ❤️ they're pretty affordable too, so if you're on the lookout (I always am!) for some new brush pens to play with, be sure to check @artnfly and maybe get a set of these for yourself. They work for doodles too, as you can see from the leafy 🍃 elements and floral parts I added here to the banner! I know this isn't the neatest video but I thought it would be cool for me to share the actual first video I made when I got these pens! Also, they sent me some other markers which I'll show you soon! You can get these pens and more on Amazon ✨ (Btw- thanks Moe, for the goodies!) .. . More handwriting:

Comment yes if you like handwriting! And what got you interested in art/ calligraphy in the first place! For me, it was HANDWRITING ✍️ ever since I was a kid, I was obsessed with handwriting and trying out the way everyone around me wrote letters. I used to copy everyone's handwriting to perfection (because all I did was practice haha) and I can change my handwriting anytime (can you? Tell me in the comments!) drawing and doodling came after that, along with learning about calligraphy and all its wonderful forms (I started with gothic blackletter and got super interested with the ease and versatility of modern calligraphy!) but handwriting has a place in my heart. I absolutely love it!! For this series of #calligraphybyaaria (where I share my thoughts about self-learning calligraphy), I feel that a person who enjoys handwriting and who frequently writes different ways (cursive and block (unjoined letters without ligatures) letters) can pick it up easily. I want to know what you think- do you enjoy both handwriting and calligraphy? Or you don't like both? What's your story? . Trying out these 07 pens straight out of the package for you to see! (You can see my opening that little protector bauble thing on the pen tip LOL). . Also check back for the Alphabet Challenge happening in @surelysimplechallenge ! Floral letters;

Requested video 🌸🌿 how to make floral letters! Surely simple steps:1️⃣ draw the letter (I am comfortable drawing directly with pen- but there's nothing wrong with using a pencil first and then inking over it) 2️⃣ add tiny floral doodles (I draw these on my wreath designs if you want more references) 3️⃣ admire the finished product! . Thinking of writing quotes in the new year though:

Comment a quote (or two) if you want me to letter it! ▶️ Okay, so last year (sounds funny to say that because it's only a few days now since 2016 became 2017) I had a plan of making a daily quote here. I did write some quotes (scroll down) but I just couldn't start a regular quote series with all the other stuff going on (especially @surelysimplechallenge!) • So I want to change things up and start that fresh and early this year. But I need your help- please comment some of your favorite quotes that really make you think/ feel something/ learn something. • In this quote series, you'll be seeing quotes that I've read and which have changed the way I think 💭 (basically powerful and meaningful and some funny and poignant ones)! I'm not going to be writing cliches and generic stuff (e.g.- inspire, dream etc) because even though they're okay- they're fillers and lazy quotes. I only like quotes that give me info to improve myself, to understand things. And that's one project I'm working on this year! So, if you know any quotes (from books, movies, off signboards, on the internet) that you think I should include in my list of quotes to write, tell me below! If I post your suggestion, I'll credit you as the inspiration too 🙂 (OH and I posted 2 videos today- see previous one next to this on feed! Is this too much or do you enjoy it?) .. Pens used: fudenosuke hard tip and @artnfly brush #artnfly . Please follow my other accounts : @opinion9 📚, @patternvilla 🎨, @surelysimplechallenge 🖌🖋 and this one @surelysimpleblog (duh) 😊

Some more:

Double tap ❤️ + Comment your favorite quotes and I'll letter them and credit you as the source! 😍▶️ I used the tape trick again (I've seen so many people try it out after getting inspired by my earlier videos – thank you!!) for this quote suggested by @meilinacho (gofollow her)! I found this watercolor wash I made just lying around so I thought it would be nice to doodle on a colorful background! Do you relate with this quote? I totally do- talent is way too overrated 😃 … This is part of my quotes series where I illustrate + letter quotes that are meaningful and interesting. I might make a quotes list, but for now the main idea is to just letter any quotes! Join me whenever you like by lettering a quote that you like and tag #surelysimplelettering so I see it and we can cheer each other on and have discussions about the quote and more! 💖😃 . PS- today is letter G on @surelysimplechallenge!! . . Please follow my other accounts : @opinion9 📚, @patternvilla 🎨, @surelysimplechallenge 🖌🖋 and this one @surelysimpleblog (duh) 😊 . Oh and I posted another video- check previous post 🙂

Doodling -What Does The Word 'Resolution' Mean in 2017? Lifestyle essay article via surelysimple.com - tips for the New Year

I’m honestly not focused on creating specific goals, tasks, or anything at all. However, I am focusing on one thing: MY DAILY ROUTINE.

I just want to evaluate myself based on the day’s work, and just chill out and forget about acing any goals or ‘resolutions’. I don’t know if you’d agree with me or not. I just want to use whatever tools I have, what opportunities I have and be happy with what I work for. And not expect anything at all. Basically, I think what I’m saying is- I just want to be more grateful.

(wait. is that a RESOLUTION?)

Oops.
