Let’s meet Milly of Blink Lettering!
If you were on stage right now, how would you introduce yourself?
I would definitely be internally freaking out if I was on stage, obviously masking this with a big smile, and wave. And simply introducing myself as Milly, a letterer who lives by the sea and has an unhealthy obsession with cheese!
When did you first really get interested in lettering and calligraphy?
I remember doing some basic calligraphy classes when I was in Primary School at about the age of 10/11. I have always been a creative person, I did graphic design at uni and now work at an advertising agency. My love for lettering recently resurfaced at the beginning of this year when I wanted to get more creative away from the computer and stumbled across an amazing Instagram community!
What are your favourite art tools and media you prefer?
I love watercolour and the flexibility of blending colours!
When you find yourself in a creative rut, how do you conquer that?
Sometimes it can get very frustrating when you’re in that situation, I tend to step away from my desk completely and go do something different for a while, like cleaning, playing games with my other half or even sleeping on it and come back to my work the next day.
What would be the ideal lettering / calligraphy assignment you’d like to work on?
I would love to create a handlettered font that would be used as a display typeface throughout a book and on the cover, especially a cookery book!
Any advice you’d like to share on finding your own lettering style?
I would say I’m still finding my style, as I’m quite new to all of this. Definitely don’t get too caught up with how great everyone else’s lettering can look, and remember yours looks fab too! Find what feels comfortable to you. I would love to create bouncing letters, but I think my need for things to be uniform makes me struggle with this!
