Hey, everyone! Restarting this feature with a bang! You’ll be seeing interviews every day from today onwards. The month of November ’16 is all about getting inspiration, and who better than the teachers of @surelysimplechallenge? Meet the teachers! -Aaria
The spotlight for today is Jo Cheung of Zuer Designs. Not only has she written guest articles sharing her knowledge on brush lettering here at Surely Simple, she also has her own shop where she sells workbooks and other designs. She’s also the first person I interviewed on my other blog opinion9.com (see that interview here) and it’s great to see her evolution from a year back to now!
If you were on stage right now, how would you introduce yourself? (You can brag! Think TedX or maybe an exhibition of your work.)
Imagine a rainbow layer cake. But covered in black icing. I think that’s the best way to describe myself. I love wearing far too much black, but really, I’m a creative person who loves colour in everything apart from clothing.
(Can you guess Jo’s favourite color?)
When did you first really get interested in lettering and calligraphy?
My lettering style is quite structured but modern, a bit like myself. I don’t really do any of the swirly loose lettering. Rather, it’s just a more flowy version of my actual handwriting.
What are your favourite art tools and media you prefer?
I absolutely love Copic markers at the moment. They have the best fine tip and creates these gorgeous thick lines as well. I love a good contrast with the thick and thin lines! I also love watercolour lettering as well. There’s just something about being able to easily blend multiple colours that gets me so excited.
When you find yourself in a creative rut, how do you conquer that?
I browse Instagram for inspiration. Everyone that I know knows that I’m pretty much always there, scrolling through photos and staring in awe! I love being able to find stuff that motivates me to continue lettering.
What would be the ideal lettering / calligraphy assignment you’d like to work on?
I’ve always wanted to create a font based on my lettering. The awesome thing is, I’m actually doing that right now (shhh!).
(You can check her Hokey Pokey Font on her Etsy now!)
Any advice you’d like to share on finding your own lettering style?
Do what feels natural to you when you write. Eventually that will develop into your own style!

JO’s TEACHER POSTS:
Teacher Takeover! ▶️ Hey everyone! I'm Jo from @zuerdesigns! I'm super excited to be sharing my letter for this challenge. I've been been interested in handwriting for as long as I can remember. I loved drawing out letters for the title of my books in primary school. My love for handwriting naturally lead me to discover brush lettering after joining Instagram 2 years ago. I haven't looked back! • My lettering tip: If you have a brush pen with individual hairs, hold it more vertically. One with a felt nib, hold it at at angle. It will really make a difference! 🖍🖊✏️🖌🖍🖊✏️✍🏻 📽: @zuerdesigns….. Feeling inspired by Jo's neat and clean lettering style? Join in the fun! Teacher Takeover! ▶️ Hi! My name is Jo (@zuerdesigns) and I've been lettering for just under 2 years! During this time I've learnt so many new tips and tricks as well as joined this amazing community of letterers on Instagram. If you can't tell, I love bright photos with lots of colour injected into them! I'm so excited to be here to share my colourful lettering with you all! • The place I've chosen is Hong Kong as it's my original home. Although I've been living in New Zealand for the past 18 years, I was born in Hong Kong and lived there for 4 years. I visit as often as I can, as I love the variety of cultures, foods and atmosphere. It's such a wonderful little country with lots to explore! (Egg tarts, anyone?) • ✍🏻My tip is to never stop trying and never stop believing that you CAN! I started lettering with no clue how to angle my brush or properly apply pressure. Two years on, I have my own brush lettering workbook, I've found my own style and I'm just beginning to learn to draw and paint. You can, and you shall! ….. 🖍🖊✏️🖌🖍🖊✏️✍🏻 📽: @zuerdesigns …..
