Meet Hazel + Her Lettering!
If you were on stage right now, how would you introduce yourself?
Hi! I’m Hazel and lettering is my jam!
When did you first really get interested in lettering and calligraphy?
I’ve always had an interest in pretty writing in general and always admired those who write so beautifully. Then marriage and motherhood came into play and I never really had a chance to pursue this hobby/addiction of mine until recently this past March. Granted I am still learning new things everyday and still finding different ways to letter, but I am loving this lettering adventure so far.
What are your favourite art tools and media you prefer?
Instagram’s lettering community has been nothing but welcoming from the very first day I started. There are so many talented letterers out there who are so encouraging and helpful. It definitely gave me the courage to keep going even on days where my lettering just will not cooperate. My favorite tools to letter are pencil, tombow fudenosuke hard and soft brush tip pen, tombow dual brush pens, pentel aquash waterbrush and pointed pen. Yup! Pretty much all since I am still finding out what works best for me.
When you find yourself in a creative rut, how do you conquer that?
I look at other letterers to get inspiration and try to incorporate it into my own style. Most of the time, I just letter away and write the alphabets/words/phrases in different ways until I like a specific style and go with that. Practice really is key.
What would be the ideal lettering / calligraphy assignment you’d like to work on?
Hmmm…right now, I would love to work on weddings (from signages and invitations).
Any advice you’d like to share on finding your own lettering style?
My advice for those who want to start calligraphy is to practice, practice, practice. Even just 5-10 minutes a day is better than none at all. I was struggling with finding time to practice when I first started lettering and then I realized that even just a little bit each day helps because at the end of the week it adds up. Another, is to embrace imperfection. This was extremely difficult for me because 1. I’m OCD, 2. a perfectionist, and last, I was afraid that no one will like my lettering/art because it’s not perfect. Then I accepted later on that my “imperfections” are what gives my lettering its own unique style. I still struggle with this once in a while but I just have to go with it.

WHAT HAZEL SHARED AS PART OF THE TEACHER TAKEOVER:
Teacher Takeover! ▶️ Hi! Hazel here😊. I am humbled and honored to be one of the 'teachers' featured @surelysimplechallenge . As a newbie, I have discovered that practicing even 5-10minutes a day is better than 0 minutes a day. Practicing really does make a difference. • One of my favorite tool to use is the good 'ol pencil and the best part is, you can erase! Just remember: light pressure on your upstrokes and heavy pressure on your downstrokes to achieve those thin and thick lines. So what are you waiting for? Grab your pencil and practice practice practice! 😉 🖍🖊✏️🖌🖍🖊✏️✍🏻 📽: @hazelslettering ….. Feeling inspired by Hazel's graceful letter? Even made better with just a simple pencil! Join in the fun! Teacher Takeover! ▶️Hi everyone! Hazel here. I'm super excited to kick off this month's challenge @surelysimplechallenge and the NOUN I chose is adventure because lettering to me has been quite the adventure! And embossing is one of them💗. • A few tips about embossing: -prepping your paper or piece with some kind of anti static pad/pillow helps get rid of unwanted excess embossing powder -I found that storing your embossing powder in a bigger plastic container helps get the powder from going everywhere since I am quite the messy embosser🙈. I also like to use a plastic spoon to scoop the powder from the container. -when you heat your piece, stay close but do not over heat. Once the powder melts and solidifies that means it's done. -also it's normal for thin papers to warp during the heating process but if you quickly run the back side of the paper with the heating tool it helps straighten it out a bit. Hope all these tips help. Happy embossing! ….. 🖍🖊✏️🖌🖍🖊✏️✍🏻 📽: @hazelslettering ….. Feeling inspired by Hazel's multicolor embossing?
