If you were on stage right now, how would you introduce yourself? (You can brag! Think TedX or maybe an exhibition of your work.)
I would introduce myself as a simple, down-home girl from Alabama. I love the Lord and my family. I think simplicity is what makes me able to connect with people as a calligrapher. They don’t come any more “regular” than me!
When did you first really get interested in lettering and calligraphy?
I’ve been interested in lettering and calligraphy my whole life. As a child, I would copy the letters out of my mom’s Speedball book and write phrases I heard on television as I practiced. I started addressing wedding invitations 23 years ago using a Pilot Precise V-7 roller ball pen. Boy, did I have a lot to learn!
What are your favourite art tools and media you prefer?
My favorite art tools: my oblique pen holders (currently I have nine), walnut ink for practicing, Rhodia pads, zebra g nibs, and the Blanzy 605
When you find yourself in a creative rut, how do you conquer that?
When I’m in a creative rut, I love to search my favorite artists on Instagram for inspiration and ideas. I make a mental note of the things I like and want to try. When I’m producing a piece, I try not to refer back to their work, so it is truly something of my own and not copied.
What would be the ideal lettering / calligraphy assignment you’d like to work on?
I have always wanted to spend the day at Louis Vuitton signing gift cards. Hopefully one of these days!
Any advice you’d like to share on finding your own lettering style?
Finding your own lettering style can be tricky. I would suggest to start in pencil, erase and try again until your hand falls into a rhythm and you get a look that you like. Take a picture of it and study the picture and see what changes you need to make.

Teacher Takeover! ▶️ Hi, I'm Suzanne Cunningham (@suzcunningham) and have been doing calligraphy about 23 years. I got brave enough to try the pointed pen about 2 1/2 years ago. What a game changer! ✔️My favorite tip is always the same: take a picture of your work and look at the picture to critique it. Somehow, when I do this, the mistakes and inconsistencies immediately jump off the page. 🖍🖊✏️🖌🖍🖊✏️✍🏻 📽: @suzcunningham….. Feeling inspired by Suzanne's attention to the intricate details?
