There are so many DIYs out there to decorate walls, add colour to accessories, make things look pretty. I keep thinking of different things to DIY at home, and of course, the internet has unlimited inspiration. However, we all seem to forget one thing..the floor! (Not counting rugs and carpets here.) Floors are so bare. Of course, we don’t want to clutter our floor.. that would be called a mess. But creating a small pretty decor piece (which can be moved anytime) might just add a pop of beauty to the floor at home. Am I right? And that’s what intrigued me to create this DIY gemstone rangoli inspired floor decor.
Rangoli is an indian art of making designs on the floor with fine colourful sand (or grains? Not really sure.) However, that takes time, intricacy and practice to make (In India, you will always find someone holding a Rangoli making contest during any festival time. Or just any regular day, for the matter.) And of course, it doesn’t last forever. If someone accidentally steps on it, or the wind blows in the rangoli’s direction..well, that’s pretty much the signal to clean it up and start making a new one.
So, I didn’t want any cleaning hassles or anything like that. This wall decor is portable, and has no mess involved after it’s displayed on the floor.
And here’s how you make it:
Thick transparency sheets//glue//gemstones of different sizes and colours//scissors//pen
1// Cut out the desired shapes you want. I prefer cutting out a circle and 4-5 petal like shapes to create a flowery piece. Use a pen to draw them out. Don’t worry about any pen lines showing because they will be covered later on. It’s totally up to you what shape you want to make. Symmetrical and flowery shapes look great and are the easiest to do.
2// Create a thin line of glue along the outermost edge of your shape. Start sticking your gems.
3// After one line has been done, stick a second border line with different gems for a contrast.
4// At the pointy end of your shape (or if it’s a circle, the centre) add a large gemstone and surround it with smaller stones.
5// Complete all the pieces you need to make the full decor piece.
6// Place all the different pieces on the floor (side of the door, near a cupboard) and admire your work! People who see it will also admire it- I guarantee it.
This doesn’t have to be on the floor. You can also place it on top of a wide open shelf, or on the table as added decor. On the floor, it’s the most visible. Feel free to place your decor wherever it suits best in your home!
