So, one day I just woke up with the intention to..work with clay. I don’t know why, but I just really wanted to. I brainstormed on some things I could make..and finalized on just making some jewelry items. I hadn’t worked with clay in a long time, so I wanted to just relax and make something easy. And the catch? I wanted to make the clay by hand too.
Here’s the recipe for how I made the clay and baked it too:
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 cup hot water
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/ Add flour, then salt. Add the vegetable oil and mix it around a bit. (This is in contrast to mixing all the ingredients at once-it just makes it easier to stir with this step.)
2/ Then add the baking soda, and the hot water. Mix it until you get a doughy concoction.
3/ Knead it until it’s smooth.
4/ After creating the shapes you want, it’s oven for baking. Pre heat the oven for 3-4 minutes, and then put in the shapes at 150 F. Set the timer for ten minutes.
5/ After the first ten minutes are done, continue baking them for another 10-15 minutes.
There! That wasn’t so difficult after all! Now comes the interesting bit.
I had a bunch of big cookie cutters, so I just went ahead and used them. I also used a crochet stick to pierce a little hole for a pendant gap.
What I ended up with:
4/Some early Valentines day pendants
5/Gift décor tags
Wow! I didn’t realize I made all that till I typed this right now! I hope you like them and get some inspiration of your own!
For me, this was just a really fun and relaxing activity. I had fun painting them too. For painting them, I used acrylic paints.
I gave some of the pendants to some friends, and I was happily surprised by the positive feedback! DIY really does please people!
As for me, it has definitely inspired me to grab some clay and put on my baking gloves again sometime soon!
